Norfolk City Treasurer Daun Hester with NSTS youth and staff

Norfolk City Treasurer, Daun Sessoms Hester Visits NSTS

"I got discouraged, but I knew I wanted it."

Next Step To Success heard those words of wisdom from Norfolk City Treasurer, Daun Sessoms Hester. Ms. Hester shared her story and then stayed to answer dozens of insightful questions from our youth. She also gave pointers and advice to the youth that hope to be in government themselves one day. We are so grateful for her time and can't wait to see Ms. Hester again.

P.S. See if you can guess which of her part-time jobs was her favorite

Answer:  Working in the ticket booth/Will Call at the Scope

Centura College

Talk about a field trip  fave—some youth even wish they could have their birthday parties at Centura College in Chesapeake because of the fun they had. The staff led NSTS youth through hands-on activities related to the four trades they offer. We felt paraffin wax and smelled essential oils used in Massage Therapy (peppermint and lavender are a must for natural bug spray). Youth practiced self-care with facials and skincare 101 and learned what it takes to become an aesthetician. Medical Assisting activities highlighted life skills and health through infant CPR workshops, practicing taking blood pressure, and listening to our heartbeats with stethoscopes we got to keep.

The cherry on the top?  We had a neon party in the x-ray training room complete with face painting, slushies, and learning how to take x-rays. Centura College in Chesapeake sure knows how to make learning fun.
