Next Step to Success Weekly Update

Message from our Executive Director

What an incredible first week of our After-School Program at Next Step to Success! One of the highlights was seeing so many of our summer program students return this fall, ready to continue their journey of growth and success. Familiar faces mixed with new ones created an atmosphere full of energy, excitement, and community spirit. Students jumped right in with their Success Coaches, building friendships, setting goals, and embracing opportunities to learn and lead. This strong start has us excited for all that’s ahead—together, we’re creating a year of empowerment, achievement, and lasting impact!

With Gratitude,

James Harris

From the Director of Academics

This week’s academic focus was:

  • The launch of our Homework Hub! Youth now have a daily opportunity to complete missing assignments, get ahead on studying, and receive academic support.
  • Many students took advantage of this space, and we’re excited to see the positive impact on their grades.
  • We also welcomed our first volunteer this week — a Norfolk Public Schools math teacher who provided tutoring in Algebra. Several youth were able to sit one-on-one and get the extra help they needed.

We are thrilled to see the Homework Hub off to such a strong start and look forward to the continued growth and success of our students.

From the Program Director

This week’s experiential learning focus was:

  • Teambuilding activities that encouraged collaboration and problem-solving
  • Community connections as youth began getting to know one another and building relationships with the staff at Next Step to Success

Our students are learning the value of teamwork and beginning to form strong bonds that will support them throughout the year.

Culinary Corner

This week in the kitchen, our youth enjoyed:

  • Tuesday, the youth enjoyed Grilled Chicken Elote Bowls paired with Cinnamon Churros drizzled in chocolate.
  • Wednesday, they savored Baked Chicken & Gravy with Rosemary Garlic Mashed Potatoes and a side of Savory Green Beans.
  • Thursday, the youth got to choose between a Chicken Caesar Salad or a Salad Wrap, served with Potato Wedges and Oranges.
  • Friday, they wrapped up the week with Juicy Hamburgers, Crispy Potato Wedges, Sweet Corn, and Bomb Pops for dessert.
