Next Step to Success Weekly Update

Message from our Executive Director

Week three at Next Step to Success has been another step forward in building consistency, connection, and confidence among our students. Routines are becoming second nature, and it’s exciting to see students arrive eager to participate, learn, and grow each afternoon. The energy in our program spaces continues to reflect a sense of belonging and teamwork.

This week, Success Coaches led engaging activities that blended academic support with creative outlets.. Their enthusiasm reminds us that when expectations are paired with encouragement, real growth happens.

We are thrilled to welcome two new Success Coaches—Ms. Ronisha Berry and Mr. Jack Brown—to our team! Their passion and commitment to our mission are already evident, and we know they will bring tremendous value to our students. With two more Success Coaches joining by the end of September, our capacity to provide personalized support is growing stronger each week.

Week three reinforced the importance of consistency, caring relationships, and celebrating both big and small victories along the way.

From the Director of Academics

This week’s academic focus:

  • This week, we welcomed a few new volunteers to the Homework Hub
  • The youth continue to engage in a variety of activities that explore Thought, STEM Art, and Team Building through Athletics
  • NSTS is excited to welcome two new Success Coaches to the team! Coach Jack, a VB native, comes to us from Colorado. His background is in outdoor exploration and leadership with youth. Coach Ronisha joins us with a background in behavioral management and is another strong asset to our team. Both bring diverse strengths, and we are excited for our youth to be mentored by them both!
From the Program Director

The week’s experiential learning focus:

• Youth played volleyball in the gym, focusing on their serving skills.

• They completed a gratitude project, creating a leaf wall with things they are thankful for.

• On Tuesday, all after-school activities were canceled due to Norfolk Public Schools’ closure.

We are proud to see our youth building connections, practicing gratitude, and growing together each week.
