NSTS Summer Camp

Our 8-week summer camp is off to an amazing start! We have divided our camp into four groups —Group Success, led by Assistant Site Manager, Imari Santiago; Group Grit led by Success Coach, Sofi Woodward; Group Growth Mindset led by Success Coach, Shannon Lloyd, and; Group Optimism led by Success Coach, Angela Ward.

We kicked our first week off with a three-day series at Tidewater Tech where Group Success dove into their carpentry skill and built colorful bird houses for our feathered friends. The action did not end there as Monday through Friday, the week was filled with a range of engaging activities –cooking workshops where youth honed their sous chef skills, singing classes with professional singer Ciara Parker, violin and painting classes with Arts for Learning Virginia, beat making workshops with Music Theory Studios, theater and improv games with Virginia Stage, digital photography classes with Judith Soule, a hair braiding workshop with Ms. Rossie Dean, and pan steel drumming with Mosaic Steel Orchestra.

We would be remiss if we did not mention the launch of our newest partnership with Slover Library. There, NSTS participants received their own library cards and explored the virtual games of Slover’s Teen Zone. The week concluded with our Friday field trip to Apex Entertainment where youth were treated to a hair-raising time engaging all of their senses in Apex’s Navy-themed laser tag and playing classic video games in Apex’s arcade room.
