Oyster Cage Building with the Chesapeake Bay Foundation
Next Step To Success returned to the Chesapeake Bay Foundation's Brock Environmental Center for more oyster restoration efforts. Cages for oysters, which keep them protected and help them grow faster, were built by our youth. In total they built 11 cages, which will be home to 11,000 oyster larvae which will become spat --think baby oysters. Oysters are the local waterways' water filtering heroes. Our volunteer efforts created a safe growing space for the larvae to grow to full size so they can filter 550,000 gallons of water a day.
Time to buy some peanuts and Cracker Jacks! Next Step To Success visited Harbor Park on Wednesday, May 11, to cheer on the Norfolk Tides. We nearly caught a few foul balls, earned our place on the Dance Cam, and got a surprise visit from Riptide the mascot. The Tides may have lost the game, but the entire night felt like a homerun. A special thanks to Chuck McPhillips for making this special night possible.
