Celebrating Judge Brown Jackson Confirmation

Youth celebrated Ketanji Brown Jackson’s confirmation as the first Black woman on the U.S. Supreme Court during our Check-In and Announcements this week. Boys and girls in the program cheered when they heard the news. A few girls shared how they saw themselves represented when they saw Judge Brown Jackson.

Let’s Dance

Dance with Ms. Coco is going very well. The youth are practicing a choreographed dance to present at our Stepping-Up Ceremony at the end of the school year. Ms. Coco creatively engages all the youth that take her dance lessons while also giving some youth stand-out roles.

True Grit

Next Step To Success incorporates Angela Duckworth’s game-changing work on “grit” when we coach the youth. Grit is the characteristic that forms at the intersection of passion and perseverance. It’s also the secret weapon of many successful people. NSTS knows building grit in youth empowers them and elevates their skills. Youth completed a Grit Scale on Duckworth’s website to see how gritty they are. They’ll take it again at the end of the school year to track their progress.

Together We Can

Heather Fine from Together We Can Foundation led another great Job Readiness workshop this week. Youth worked on resume builders Heather can use to create resumes for them. Imagine being in high school with your very own professional resume already drafted. We are so lucky to have Heather’s amazing expertise.

They’re in Kahoot(s)

Kahoot! isn’t just a game at NSTS—it’s an experience. Youth competed to answer trivia about important women in history and current events around the world. There was laughter and serious competitive energy. Our winners tasted victory—and their sweet candy prizes, too.
